Adam Gemili finished third in the men’s 200m in his season opener for the 200m event. The race was won in a world lead time of 19.90 by the 19 year old American sensation, Noah Lyles.
Afterwards, Gemili said: “It was my fastest ever opener so I have to be pleased with that. I made a good start, but it was a messy race and my (lack of) fitness showed. It was a long way to come for a race but I've enjoyed every minute. I hope to be faster by the time I get to London (World Championships).”
In the high jump Robbie Grabarz was seventh with a 2.20m clearance. He was unable to match last week’s success in Doha where he had cleared a superb 2.31m to take second place. For the second week running the event was won by Mutaz Essa Barshim with a jump of 2.33m.
Anyika Onuora found it tough going in lane nine in the 400m finishing in ninth place in 53.98. Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas stormed to victory in a world lead 49.77.
Elsewhere Jenny Meadows played her part in the race of the day as she provided some excellent pace making for Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon in the 1500m. The Olympic champion held off a strong challenge from Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia in the last 300m to finish in 3:59.22; the first sub-four minute time registered this season.
Following the race, Meadows commented: “The startlist was amazing especially with Faith in the race. I tried to run economic and give Faith the chance to run sub-four minutes. Glad she made it! Faith is so strong. I believe she will show us some great races this season.”
The next Diamond League meeting takes place in Eugene on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 May,
