Yared Nugese (USA) - the recently crowned US national champion - is the third-fastest over the distance this season and heads an exciting line up for the London Athletics Meet on Sunday 23 July. The former NCAA champion clocked a PB of 3:29.02 for third at the Bislett Games in Oslo on 15 June.
Olympic silver medallist and 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN) was fourth in Oslo in 3:29.08 and will return to the London Stadium where he finished runner up at the 2017 World Championships. His lifetime best is 3:28.28 from Monaco in 2021.
Mario Garcia (ESP), fourth in the World Championships in Eugene and European bronze medallist; Azeddine Habz (FRA), European indoor bronze medallist; Oliver Hoare (AUS), Commonwealth champion and Australian national record holder; and Narve Gilje Nordas (NOR), fifth in the 2021 European Indoor Championships 3000m, will also line up in London. They are currently ranked sixth (3:29.18), seventh (3:29.26), eighth (3:29.41) and ninth (3:29.47) quickest so far in 2023 courtesy of PBs in Oslo.
Ireland’s fast-improving Andrew Coscoran is ranked 13th over 1500m for 2023 to date. He lowered his PB and Irish national record to 3:30.42 when finishing fourth in an incredible Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia on Sunday (16 July), taking two seconds off his previous best. Behind Coscoran in Silesia was New Zealand’s Samuel Tanner, who ran a PB for fifth (3:31.24) and will also line up in London.
Adel Mechaal (ESP), Cole Hocker (USA); and Stewart McSweyn (AUS) - fifth, sixth and seventh in the Tokyo Olympic Games and with PBs of 3:30.77, 3:31.40 and 3:29.51 respectively - make up the international field for the London Athletics Meet. McSweyn is the quickest of the trio this season with 3:32.85.
British champion Neil Gourley, the 2023 European indoor silver medallist, is 14th fastest in the world this year to date with a recent 3:30.88 (from Oslo) and leads the domestic contenders.
He is joined by Great Britain and Northern Ireland representatives Elliot Giles, George Mills and Matt Stonier, the athletes who were second, third and fourth at the UK Championships. Giles is the 2016 European 800m bronze medallist and has a 1500m best of 3:31.56 from the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne at the end of June; George Mills is a former European U18 800m champion with a 1500m best of 3:31.54 from Silesia on Sunday; and Stonier – fifth in the 2022 European Championships 1500m – has a best of 3:32.50 from a high quality Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham where he finished seventh.
