Dina Asher Smith, Imani Lansiquot, Amy Hunt and Daryll Neita proved to be dominant. The quartet clocked a world lead, meeting record and national record-equalling time of 41.55, matching the mark set at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021 and beating France and Great Britain ‘2’ into second (42.10) and third (42.46) respectively. Australia ran an Oceania record in fourth (42.48).
Double European champion Asher-Smith got the team off to a strong start and delivered a smooth changeover to Lansiquot who had earlier won the women’s national 100m race in 11.12. Hunt extended the team’s lead, and with a textbook change to Neita set her up for a clear run in to the finish.
Later in the programme, Asher-Smith, Neita and Hunt went on to finish in third (22.07), fourth (22.20) and eighth (22.96) in a high quality women’s 200m won by USA’s soon-to-be triple Olympic gold medallist Gabby Thomas in a 21.82 meeting record.
“Equal national record and world lead in the 4 x 100m and a very fun 200m...the perfect send off to Paris,” wrote Hunt on Instagram post-event.
Neita, also on Instagram, said: “London Diamond League = home. It was amazing to race in front of a home crowd...this meet is always so much fun, and it was definitely the perfect send off before the Olympics.”
London was special, but the best of the summer was yet to come for the British quartet who went on to win a brilliant silver at the Olympic Games in Paris in 41.85. It was GB & NI’s best performance in the women’s 4 x 100m relay since 1956 and an upgrade to the bronze medals won in Rio and Tokyo.
