Historically a meet that has played host to the world’s best athletes, including the likes of Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah, Laura Muir, Dame Jess Ennis-Hill and Shaunae Miller, 2019 promises to be no different.
Taking place in spectacular London Stadium - and joining the 15 events that were announced on the bill of the event back in November - ten additional events have been added to the programme for 2019.
Among the ten are both male and female 4x100m relays, with the home crowd sure to hope for more British victories in both events following spectacular performances from the Great Britain & Northern Ireland squads in recent years.
Like-wise, the presence of the men’s 110m hurdles on the programme will also generate much interest, and not just due to the possibility of seeing British star Andrew Pozzi.
Given that a quick scan down the all-time list for the event serves to show many athletes who are currently competing and active – namely Aries Merritt (USA, world record holder), Omar McLeod (JAM, 5th quickest ever), Sergey Shubenkov (ANA, 10th quickest ever) and Orlando Ortega (ESP, 14th quickest ever) – the likelihood that some of the fastest hurdlers in history will be present in London later this year is high.
Further additions on the men’s side of competition are the 200m, 3000m/5000m (distance TBC), Emsley Carr Mile, 400m Hurdles and Long Jump. With the event flourishing due to the presence of the supremely talented and ever-entertaining Karston Warholm and the seemingly unstoppable Abderrahman Samba – the second-quickest man in history in the event – the 400m Hurdles is one event in particular that could well see something special happen if both men are present in July.
Alongside the men’s event, the women’s 200m is also added and is sure to feature some of the quickest women in the world on what is known for being a lightning-quick track, with the women’s 800m completing the additions to a fast and furious two sessions of action.
