Newly crowned UK Champion over 1500m, Neil Gourley (GBR), will be one of the favourites to add his name to the exclusive list of winners when he lines up on Saturday afternoon. The Scottish athlete will compete in Paris this summer over 1500m, so this will be the perfect last race and send off before he takes to the French capital.
He will face strong competition from the likes of world bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordas (NOR), European U20 1500m champion Niels Laros (NED), with former winners Stewart McSweyn (AUS) and Elliot Giles (GBR) also on the start list.
European 5000m silver medallist George Mills (GBR) and last year’s victor, Adam Fogg (GBR) add further firepower to the field, with 2022 Commonwealth 1500m champion Oliver Hoare (AUS) also lining up.
The race was inaugurated in 1953 by Sir William Carr in memory of his father Sir Emsley Carr, a former editor of the News of the World. The newspaper was then a major sponsor of athletics in Britain and has run every single year except 2020 due to the covid pandemic. Some of the illustrious former winners include greats of the sport such as Kip Keino, Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett, Haile Gebrselassie and Hicham El Guerrouj.
