In 2013, in the first edition of the Anniversary Games, Usain Bolt (JAM) recorded a season’s best 9.85 as he stormed to victory on his first return to the London Stadium.
Despite getting off to a poor start, the six-time Olympic champion recovered well and found his stride to cruise to victory ahead of Michael Rodgers (USA), shaving nine hundredths of a second off his season’s best in the process.
Bolt’s performance brought the curtain down on what had been a fine evening of athletics for all inside the stadium in the first instalment of the Anniversary Games.
He started the evening in typically Usain Bolt style as he was paraded around the sold-out London stadium on a motorised rocket ship that spat flames from the back of it.
And on the track, he proved to be nothing more than too hot to handle, scorching away despite making a sluggish start.
Coming into the race, the event had one of the strongest fields of the programme with every athlete running under 10 seconds.
The race lived up to the billing as a frantic start from all saw Rodgers open up a small lead in the opening 20 metres.
But Bolt found his feet and hit his stride to accelerate away and leave the field trailing in his wake as he extended his unbeaten run in all 100m races to ten.
