In 2015 at the Anniversary Games, Dina Asher-Smith became the first British woman in history to run under 11-seconds in the women’s 100m.
The then 19-year-old’s 10.99 (+0.1) in the heats surpassed her previous British record of 11.02 (+1.8), set just a few weeks prior to the Anniversary Games in Hengelo, The Netherlands.
She made a good start from lane seven and was in a strong position heading into the closing stages. In the final 30 metres, she found an extra gear to pull away from Murielle Ahoure (CIV) and set her new personal best.
Speaking after winning her heat, Asher-Smith said: “It means a lot, I'm still a bit confused. I'm trying to keep calm so I can execute in the final. I'm over the moon but I've still got a lot to improve because it was messy in places.”
Before heading to Hengelo and then to London, the previous British record had been held by Montell Douglas, who clocked 11.05 in Loughborough.
Asher-Smith went on to finish fourth in the final as Dafne Schippers (NED) won in 10.92, a new national record. The time of 11.06 recorded by Asher-Smith in the final helped was the fourth fastest British time ever recorded.
Following her strong showing at the Anniversary Games, Asher-Smith had recorded three of the four fastest women’s 100m times in British history.
